There is something I absolutely love about finding a date-night idea that is a little different from the usual dinner-and-a-movie routine. And if you’re anything like me, sometimes you just want an excuse to get out, do something fun together, and remember that you’re more than just the people making dinner, doing laundry and keeping everyone else organized!
That’s why Science World After Dark: Science of Sleight – Magic Edition caught my attention.
On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Science World is trading the usual family-friendly daytime experience for an adults-only evening where science and magic come together. The event runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and tickets are currently listed at $39.99.
And honestly, the concept sounds like such a fun night out.
When science starts looking a lot like magic
Magic has always had that wonderful ability to make us question what we just saw. How did they do that? Where did that come from? Did I seriously just watch that happen?
This After Dark event takes that curiosity one step further by looking at the actual science behind sleight of hand, misdirection, perception and illusion.
The evening features several accomplished magicians, including Shawn Farquhar, a two-time World Champion of Magic who has appeared on Ellen, Masters of Illusion and Fool Us, along with Vancouver magician Alex Zander and internationally performing magician Billy Hsueh.
So this isn’t simply watching a magic show and wondering how on earth someone pulled off a trick. There is a whole scientific side to explore as well which, let’s be honest, makes it feel very Science World.
A very different kind of date night
One of my favourite things about Vancouver is that there are always opportunities to find something a little unexpected to do together.
Instead of sitting across from each other at the same restaurant you’ve been to five times, imagine wandering around Science World, checking out the exhibits, watching live magic and then inevitably spending half the evening trying to figure out how the magician fooled you.
There is also a Learn a Magic Trick demonstration where guests can get a little hands-on with the art of sleight of hand.
And yes, there are food and drink options available throughout the evening, including wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages, along with food options.
Basically, it’s a chance to put the phones down for a few hours, get out of the house and have something genuinely different to talk about afterwards. Not to mention walking away with a new party trick you can impress some kids with!
Bring your curious side
The event is strictly 19+, and Science World requires government-issued ID for entry, so as always this is definitely one for the adults. Making Science World a kid free oasis of fun and learning for us big kids at heart.

For me, the appeal isn’t really about being a huge magic aficionado. It’s the combination of everything—the atmosphere, the science, the performances and getting to experience Science World in a completely different way.
Sometimes we just need an evening that makes us feel like kids again… only this time, we’re allowed to stay up late.
