Every year we look forward to Fan Expo Vancouver and this year was no exception. There was so much to do and see in the three days of family day weekend that I barely managed to do it all. But I do have some spectacular highlights that I needed to share with all of you.
Celebrity Q&A Sessions
There were so many great Q&A’s this year and I went to three of them: William Shatner, Ming-Na Wen, and the Trailer Park Boys. All of them were amazing and so much fun to be apart of. They are a great way to get to know the actors and an great way to hear some of the more behind the scenes moments each of them share. I love each of them and I think, out of the three, Ming-Na Wen was our families favorite to listen to. I have loved her since the days of Joy Luck Club and Mulan, having grown up idolizing her made it very special for me. Seeing me enjoy it so much is what made it my husbands favorite apparently.

Family Friendly Fun
This year they had some of the cutest sections for families with younger kids. Even though my boys were a little too old for these moments I loved watching the Princess sing-a-long, I really wanted to enjoy the adorable Animal Crossing area, and I was super sad the boys didn’t want to create a Mario Level picture. I should have just made them make me one and then done it myself and not been shy, but we all make silly mistakes thinking we are too big for things don’t we? They also did sorting ceremonies again this year which I always find fun.

Geekery Shopping
One of the best things at Fan Expo Vancouver is the shopping. Not only do you have tonnes of amazing merch to buy but you also have some of the most talented artists and artisans from all over B.C.! The talent is mind boggling and I always find it hard to not spend a small fortune getting something from everyone. This year one of my favorite places to stop was Morgan’s Pillows and Patchworks booth. This amazing woman makes the cutest things and I am so happy to add one of her pieces to my own collection.

Lots to Learn
One of the other great thing about Fan Expo is that is gives you and your kids a chance to ask some incredible people in the gaming and art world questions. Everyone is so kind and they’re happy to answer you and your kids questions about their profession, how to get into the field and anything else you can think of. Their favorite thing to do is educate young aspiring creators and they never make you feel like you are taking up too much of their time. I can’t speak more highly of the patience they all have answering the questions from all the kids. Don’t be shy, ask them, they love to talk to you about what they do and how they create!
Every year there is more to see, more to do and even more incredible people to meet. I can’t wait to see what next year will have in store – maybe i’ll get lucky and snag a celebrity interview next year, I miss getting those opportunities!
