In the heart of Vancouver, the festive season is set to sparkle with a musical celebration that transcends time and tradition. Early Music Vancouver (EMV) and the Vancouver Chamber Choir invite you to an enchanting evening of Handel’s Messiah on December 8, 2023, at 7:30 pm at The Orpheum. This highly anticipated performance promises an exquisite blend of baroque styling, captivating storytelling, and exceptional talent, all under the baton of celebrated conductor Alexander Weimann.
A Harmonious Confluence of Talent
EMV’s in-house orchestra, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra (PBO), and the Vancouver Chamber Choir will unite to breathe life into Handel’s timeless masterpiece. Led by conductor Alexander Weimann, the performance will feature four internationally acclaimed soloists: soprano Sherezade Panthaki, alto Allyson McHardy, tenor Nicholas Scott, and bass Jonathon Adams. Each soloist will deliver their remarkable performance from memory, adding a unique depth to the storytelling aspect of this beloved work.
“This rendition of Handel’s Messiah is not just a concert; it’s a journey through the sacredness and fragility of the human experience, beautifully depicted through the life and legacy of Christ,” says EMV’s Artistic & Executive Director Suzie LeBlanc. “In a world yearning for goodwill and peace, Handel’s Messiah speaks to the heart of seasonal proclamations, making it more relevant than ever.”
An Authentic Baroque Experience
Handel’s Messiah, composed in a mere 24 days, has transcended boundaries and cultures since its inception. EMV and the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s rendition promises an intimate, baroque styling of this seasonal favorite, reminiscent of the period instruments and virtuosity Handel himself would have appreciated. The performance will feature an orchestra of 21 period instrumentalists, a chorus of 24 chamber vocalists, and four international soloists specializing in baroque ornamentation performance practice. Audiences can expect to be transported to the concert halls of 18th century England, immersing themselves in the transcendent legacy of this universal treasure.
“The Messiah is a marvelously balanced work, filled with moments of joy, solemnity, and grandeur. Handel’s ability to compose for voices is unparalleled, and experiencing this work live is a true delight,” says Kari Turunen, Artistic Director of the Vancouver Chamber Choir.
